A staff from Shanghai Jiao Tong College has printed a wide-ranging overview of perovskite/perovskite/silicon triple-junction photo voltaic cells (PSTJSCs), highlighting their fast progress and outlining future analysis priorities. The research, showing in Nano-Micro Letters, was led by Leiping Duan, Cheng Xu, and Jianghui Zheng.
As silicon photo voltaic cells method their theoretical ceiling of 29.4 % effectivity, researchers are turning to multi-junction gadgets. Perovskite-based tandems have drawn specific curiosity due to their tunable bandgaps, cost-effective processing, and powerful optoelectronic efficiency.
Triple-junction designs promise important positive aspects. Modeling signifies that optimized buildings may obtain efficiencies past 49 %, far surpassing present perovskite/silicon tandems. Because the first proof-of-concept PSTJSC in 2018 achieved solely 14 % effectivity, licensed gadgets now exceed 27 % as of 2024.
Challenges stay, together with present mismatch between subcells, voltage deficits in wide-bandgap perovskites brought on by defects and interfaces, light-induced section segregation in mixed-halide absorbers, and total system stability below long-term stress.
The overview highlights methods below investigation. These embody fine-tuning bandgaps with halide and cation engineering, incorporating tin-based perovskites, and utilizing clear conductive oxides or ultrathin metals for environment friendly interconnections. Stability analysis can also be intensifying, with additive engineering, improved crystallinity, and superior encapsulation strategies below improvement.
Future progress will rely on combining molecular-level supplies design with strong system architectures. The authors stress the necessity for scalable fabrication methods appropriate with textured silicon and encapsulation programs that guarantee many years of sturdiness. With these advances, PSTJSCs may ship inexpensive, sustainable, and ultra-efficient solar energy at business scale.
